1 Animal Walks Warm-Up
4 min Difficulty: Beginner Age: u8 Court: Half

Players cross the court doing different animal walks: bear crawl forward, crab walk sideways, inchworm forward, frog jumps, spider crawl.

Full-body dynamic warm-up that's actually fun. Activates hips, shoulders, core, gets kids laughing.

Coaching points
Bear crawl: opposite hand and foot together.
Crab walk: bum off the ground, eyes forward.
Inchworm: straight legs on the walk-out.
Frog jumps: explode from squat, land soft.
Don't sacrifice form for speed.
2 Stride-Stop & Jump-Stop Series
10 min Difficulty: Beginner Age: u12 Court: Full

Player dribbles full speed from baseline, performs a stride-stop (1-2 step) at the foul line, then a jump-stop (both feet at once) at half-court, then a stride-stop at the far foul line, finishing with a layup.

Footwork is what separates good from great. This trains both stops to the point of muscle memory.

Coaching points
Stride-stop: outside foot lands first, then inside foot. Either foot can pivot.
Jump-stop: both feet hit ground simultaneously. Either foot can pivot.
Low on the stop — knees bent, ready to play.
Don't lose balance — control the stop, don't crash into it.
Eyes up the whole time — see the floor.
3 Mirror Defensive Slides
6 min Difficulty: Beginner Age: u10 Court: Half

Two players face each other across the lane. Offence makes lateral moves; defender mirrors. No fouls, no contact — pure footwork. 30 seconds, then switch.

Builds defensive habits without the pressure of getting beaten.

Coaching points
• Stay low — chest over knees, butt down
• Step-and-slide, never cross your feet
• Hands active — palms up, ready to strip
• Push off the back foot, don't pull with the front
• Stay connected to your partner — not too close, not too far
4 Drop-Step to Power Layup
8 min Difficulty: Intermediate Age: u14 Court: Half

Post player on the block, ball entered from the wing. Catch with two hands, sense the defender's position, drop-step middle, finish with a power layup off two feet.

Fundamental post move that works at every level — the bigger the player, the harder it is to stop.

Coaching points
• Show a target hand high before the catch
• Two hands, ball chinned, elbows out
• Sense the defender — don't look
• Drop your back foot toward the middle
• Power off two feet, finish with a strong dunk or off-glass layup
5 Mikan Drill
6 min Difficulty: Beginner Age: u12 Court: Half

Classic finishing drill named after George Mikan. Player alternates left-hand and right-hand layups under the rim continuously, no dribble.

Builds touch around the basket and trains the off-hand for live finishes.

Coaching points
• Use the backboard
• Knee up on every finish (right knee for right hand)
• Soft fingertip release, no slamming
• Quick rebound, don't let the ball touch the floor
• Power leg drives off the floor
6 Cool Down Routine
4 min Difficulty: Beginner Age: u8 Court: Half

End-of-practice: 30 seconds each, toe touches, quad stretch, hamstring stretch, calf stretch, lunge stretch, cobra back stretch, shoulder rolls. Total 4 minutes.

Most coaches skip it. Don't. Recovery starts here. Players who stretch consistently miss less practice from soreness.

Coaching points
Slow movements, no bouncing.
Breathe, exhale on stretch.
Don't push through pain, just to the edge.
Hold each stretch.
Debrief while stretching: what worked today?
